The absurdity of life takes center stage in Bodycount Brian, a novel by Matt Bentley. The story focuses on Brian Rigby, a 40-year-old man described as a “hopeless turd” who has a bleak future in front of him. He loses his dead-end job only for his wife to kick him out of the house because he dared to catch her in bed with another man. Then Brian's life really goes to hell. Holed up in a seedy motel, Brian has a chance encounter with a legendary underworld figure known as the Wraith, who dies in the room, only for Brian to wake up on a plane and be mistaken for the infamous killer. He soon finds himself part of a crew ready to pull off a dangerous and remarkable heist in Ohio, where dangerous people converge with one goal in mind. Now all Brian has to do is convince the elite of the underworld that he isn't a bumbling nobody and stay alive.
Clever and meticulously crafted with a dash of humor thrown in, Bodycount Brian by Matt Bentley is a prime example of an excellent tale. The multilayered plot centers on a case of mistaken identity, a daring robbery, and betrayal as an average Joe finds himself in the middle of events that ordinary people only see in movies. Beneath the engaging storyline, themes of personal growth and self-belief will motivate readers to root for both the protagonist and even some of the bad guys. The character development is outstanding, featuring a large variety of unique individuals that challenge the distinction between good and evil. The pacing of the narrative is fast and captivating, and the storytelling is impeccable, making this an easy and delightful read. For fans of action, adventure, and crime stories with gripping plots, Bodycount Brian is not to be missed.
